Trading Tips That Actually Work

Hard-learned lessons from 7 years of crypto trading

1. Never Trade with Emotions

This sounds cliché, but I learned it the hard way. In 2021, I watched my portfolio go from $50K to $200K, then back down to $30K because I got greedy and didn't take profits. Now I have strict rules:

  • Take 25% profits at 2x gains
  • Take another 25% at 3x gains
  • Let the rest ride with a trailing stop loss
  • Never FOMO into green candles

2. Position Sizing is Everything

I used to put 50% of my portfolio into single trades. That's how I lost $50K on Terra Luna. Now I follow the 1-2-3 rule:

  • 1% risk per trade for new/risky coins
  • 2% risk for established altcoins
  • 3% risk maximum for Bitcoin/Ethereum
  • Never more than 10% in any single position

3. DCA is Boring But It Works

I spent years trying to time the market. Made some good calls, but the stress wasn't worth it. Since 2022, I've been DCA'ing $500/week into Bitcoin and Ethereum. Results:

  • Average buy price: $28K for Bitcoin, $1,800 for Ethereum
  • No stress about timing entries
  • Consistent growth over 18 months
  • Sleep better at night

4. Learn Technical Analysis (But Don't Rely on It)

TA helps, but crypto is still largely driven by narrative and sentiment. I use simple indicators:

  • RSI for overbought/oversold conditions
  • Moving averages for trend direction
  • Support/resistance levels
  • Volume analysis for confirmation

But remember: in crypto, a single Elon tweet can invalidate all your TA.

5. Have an Exit Strategy

This is where most people fail. They know when to buy but never when to sell. My current strategy:

  • Set profit targets before entering any trade
  • Use trailing stops to protect gains
  • Take profits in stages, not all at once
  • Have a plan for both bull and bear scenarios
